“PAUL STRAND: GENIUS OF FORM, AND THE DISCOVERY OF CONTEXT”

As part of a three-day program organized by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra that highlights the composer Aaron Copland and the photographer/ cinematographer Paul Strand, University at Buffalo SUNY Distinguished Professor & James Agee Professor of American Culture Bruce Jackson will give a talk about Strand’s photography in Mexico and the Hebrides. This free talk will take place on October 15 at 5:30 pm at the Albright-Knox.

The three-day program will begin on Wednesday, October 14, at 7 pm, with Copland and the Cold War, a melding of music, theater and history, at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. It will conclude on Friday, October 16, at 7 pm, with Copland in Mexico at Kleinhans Music Hall, featuring a concert of works by Copland followed by a screening of Strand’s 1936 film Redes, with a score by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas. The concert and film will be followed by a discussion with BPO Conductor JoAnn Falletta, Jackson, and cultural historian Joseph Horowitz.
