In order to support and promote a culture of grant writing in the humanities, in 2013 HI began holding an annual External Grant Writing Workshop that takes place each September. The Workshop consists of a featured speaker who talks about best practices and common pitfalls and fields questions from a highly engaged audience. Past speakers have been Tamara Thornton and Hal Langfur, both of the History Department. Attendees are humanities and arts faculty members who range from our newest faculty to some of our most seasoned. The latter portion of the event consists of discussion of draft grant applications that have been pre-circulated within small groups for peer critique. The response to this opportunity for this combination of general guidance and specific feedback has been extremely positive, and several participants have subsequently been awarded major fellowships from such institutions as the Wenner-Gren Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This year’s Workshop will take place during the first week of classes, on Friday, September 2nd from 12pm to 3pm and will feature a discussion by Cris Miller, Professor and Chair of English, who has extensive experience garnering grants and evaluating those of others.

Lunch will be served (please RSVP)
