Making Money Research Workshop: Meeting and Discussion with Nicole Hallett, “The Problem of Wage Theft.”

October 17, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The next meeting will be a leap into our workshop’s concerns with a focus on labor (see minutes below on more about what’s to come).
We will hear a short presentation from Nicole Hallett (Law) from her recent article on wage theft. See abstract below and text attached to read before our meeting.
Katja Praznik (Arts Management) has also graciously agreed to discuss parallels in her own work on artists’ wage and labor issues.
Our meeting will be Tuesday afternoon, October 17, 3-5pm in 904 Clemens Hall.

For a pre-circulated copy of “The Problem of Wage Theft”, e-mail group co-coordinator Jordan Geiger.

“The Problem of Wage Theft”
In this article, Katja Praznik explains the current wage theft crisis in low-wage industries and survey the economic literature to understand why wage theft is such a pervasive problem. She then looks at the existing solutions and argues that while some of them may improve compliance at the margins, none of them will fundamentally alter the conditions that have allowed wage theft to thrive. Praznik then attempts to articulate strategies and policies that might work to deter employers from committing wage theft, and explores a system of ensuring wage justice by proposing that we decouple wage security from employer conduct altogether.
