Professor Tamara Levitz, Department of Comparative Literature and Musicology, UCLA
“Comparative Musicology, Comparative Literature: The Racial Foundations of Comparison.”

Tamara Levitz is a Professor in the Departments of Comparative Literature and Musicology at UCLA in Los Angeles. Her work takes place at the cutting edge of disciplinary critique and projects of academic decolonization in the North American academy. Her talk will draw on the extensive archival work she has done on the origins of some of our most hallowed professional societies, such as the American Musicological Society. It reveals the sometimes shocking political complicities in which these organizations came into being and how those origins continue to haunt our discourses and actions today.
