Graduate Workshop: Non-Academic Job Searches with Anne Krook

October 4, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

An academic who transitioned successfully to the corporate and nonprofit workplaces, Anne Krook trains graduate students and postdocs to transition to non-academic jobs and workplaces. She began her career as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she taught for seven years. After a stint in restaurant bartending, she joined Am- azon.com, where, in thirteen years at the company, she held various roles in US and interna- tional website development, program management, internal audit, and infrastructure. She then worked as VP of Operations at a startup, Mindbloom, and then as VP of Operations at Syn- apse, a product-design engineering company in Seattle. She serves on the Board of Directors of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, whose mission is to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and everyone living
with HIV.

In this session, you will learn how non-academic employers view people with PhD training, how to prepare yourself for a non-academic job search while still in graduate school or in a postdoc, and how to conduct a non-academic job search. You’ll review a tool that will help you gather information for you to create your résumé and get access to a PDF of the slides and a template of the tool after the session. After completing this three-hour session, you will know how to conduct a non-academic job search from start to finish, should you ever want or need to.
