2nd Annual Robert Creeley Lecture and Celebration of Poetry

Jerome McGann

On March 30, 5:00 pm, Jerome McGann, John Stewart Bryan Professor at the U of Virginia and author or editor of over 24 books, will be lecturing on “Reading Poetry”—a reflection tracking key stylistic innovations in poetry that were developed in England and America after 1790 and arguing that these innovations were directed at reimagining the character and practice of human perception.

McGann’s lecture is the feature event of the second annual Robert Creeley Lecture and Celebration of Poetry. For other events on this two-day schedule (including music composed by SUNY Distinguished Professor David Felder and a colloquy welcoming open discussion reflecting on McGann’s lecture) see below. All events are free and open to the public.

420 Capen Hall, Poetry Collection

  • 3:00-5:00 | A Colloquy on Poetry and Poetics
    Roundtable on “Reading Poetry,” including comments and moderated by James Maynard, Curator of the Poetry Collection of the University Libraries. At the close of this event, members of the audience are invited to read a poem—their own or by a favorite author.
