Difficult Conversations Wakanda Forever poster

Spring 2018: DifCon (Difficult Conversations About Current Issues)

Considering the phenomenal success of Black Panther, and the hope and inspiration it has fostered among many people, we ask: Is art on the side of the oppressed, as South African Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer claimed? Or is it on the side of the oppressor, as Hollywood’s 1915 The Birth of a Nation suggests?
Please join us for pizza and conversation about artistic innovation, empowerment, and democracy.

Participants:

  • Malik Sajad, Graphic Novelist (Munnu: A Boy from Kashmir), Guru Foundation-UB Humanities Institute Fellow
  • Julia Bottoms, Artist, Buffalo
  • Claire Schneider, Founder, CS1 Curatorial Projects, Buffalo
  • James Ponzo, PhD Candidate in American Studies, UB
