Public Humanities Fellows Presentations

April 13, 2016 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Jesse Miller, English

Sarah Handley-Counsins, History

Jesse Miller will engage with the burgeoning field of Health Humanities by discussing the history and contemporary practice of bibliotherapy, the use of books as tools for the promotion of mental health and emotional wellbeing. Focusing on a reading group inspired by bibliotherapy at the Erie County Medical Center, he will explore how understanding books as a kind of medicine can shape the ways publics outside of the University participate in and reimagine the value of the humanities.

Sarah will be talking about her projects for the Public Humanities Fellowship: an oral history project to gather the stories of interesting Buffalonians, and a collaborative history podcast that explores the history of Buffalo and beyond.
